Why Unabashedly Fantastic?
Nope, I'm not so conceited that I think what I write is "extremely high or great," which may be the definition of fantastic you are thinking of. My definition of fantastic is "imaginative or fanciful; remote from reality." That's how I love my novels. I love Fantasy novels unabashedly - and I especially love those that are lighter, heroic, and which transport me to a new, better world. I'm not into grimdark or horror. If a fantasy novel shows the ugly side of life then I want it to be about cleaning that ugliness up. So I'm dedicating my blog to the novels I love to read and write - those that are unabashedly fantastic. These are the novels that are so exciting you can't put them down. They may not win big awards - but they make you turn of the TV and capture your imagination for hours at a time with character and settings you want to revisit. I'd like to share my favorites and the novels on my to-read bookshelf with you, as I read and reread them.
Who am I?
On a beautiful May day, I came home from closing our yoga studio after a day of teaching yoga and learning Tai Chi. I opened an email that said "I just finished reading your novel, The Sand Sifters, and I really enjoyed it!" from HarperCollins publishing. I thought at first it was a joke. I'd submitted two novels to HV during the Open submission period 20 months before and received a short rejection a few months later, so I thought I was out of the running. It seemed that one novel had been rejected a year and a half before, the other had not. I spent the entire next week in a state of wonder bursting into "Holy crap. Wow. Holy crap," at random intervals. It's hard to believe that I now have the entire trilogy published. Unabashedly Fantastic!
I have left the Desert Rising universe behind for now and am creating an entirely new one for my newest series. I am still teaching yoga and meditation (though not at the same studio) and am learning mindfulness to allow my daily life to become as fantastic as the worlds I write.
